Newly hired IU head coach Kelvin Sampson was officially slapped on the wrist (a hard slap, but just a slap) for prior recruiting violations while at Oklahoma. He can’t get any bonuses for the next year — none were in his new contract — and he can’t phone any prospects for a year. IU loses no scholarships for hiring him, and thus Sampson keeps his new job.
According to Andy Katz, there are a number scenarios that will trivialize that ruling. Email and probably text messages are likely allowed, as is standing next to an assistant coach who dials. It is also unclear whether “prospects” includes high school and AAU players who are not about to be college eligible. This for a guys responsible for 233 documented undocumented* calls to recruits to net a great class for the Sooners.
* The NCAA is a strange organization.
