Archie toddles out of the kitchen.

“Me want chips.”

I look at his full plate, and respond with an offer of chips, could he please take another bite of lunch?

“Not me eat that.”

I ask him if it’s because of the blisters in his mouth (hand foot and mouth disease).

“Yes.”

I ask him if he’s just saying yes to get chips.

“Yes. Lunch not hurt mine mouth. See? (opens mouth wide) Me want chips.”
