Carter has spent the morning working with Lucy ripping up tile from our floor. He’s clearly having a blast, and is completely focused on the task at hand. Key to this endeavor is that Lucy treats him like an intelligent human being, and gives him real work to do, not busywork.

It reminds me of a parenting group I facilitated when one dad remembered feeling most capable when his dad taught him how to fix things around the house.
