Onion News Network arrives

Nothing like fake news to brighten the real world. The Onion—a satirical news source that needs no introduction, unless you subscribe to urban legends—has finally used some of that Miramax money to enter the video arena, competing with user-generated YouTube spoofs and televsion shows. Good luck to Todd Hanson and the rest. I wonder how much the creative process will change.

At least Carter has a chance to work on his art and spelling. And hey. Who says it’s Bad Mommy’s job to dust?

Accountability and Design

I’m not sure Helen Nissenbaum will appreciate this, but in considering her chapter, “Accountability in a Computerized Society”—in Human Values and the Design of Computer Technology, edited by Batya Friedman—I connected her work with malaria. Of course, it takes a bit to explain.

Bad Mommy on gun safety:

From the list of things I never thought would leave my pro gun-control, pacifist, peace-loving mouth, Bad Mommy was recently overheard saying:
“Oh My Gosh I shot my son!!!” (with a suction-cup dart gun with a seriously hair-like trigger and no safety).
“Archie, cut it out or you’ll break your gun.”
“Guys, not inside!! Guns are outside toys.”
