- The Alter Alter Ego
One of Eric’s emotions reminded me of Evil Spock, overworked local blogger from the alternate universe. Evil leveraged a wry wit, a close circle of blogger friends, and a good schtick to create—rather quickly—a healthy following. I can admire people like Eric and Evil Spock because I know how difficult it is to keep the pace, particularly when your thing involves being funny. Constantly.
- Ah, Tweet mystery of life
The number one reason Twitter is the new black: Steven Wright. If there were ever a man made to use this tool, it is the king of dry one-liners. I’d be surprised if the person behind this Twitter account isn’t the real comedian, but then again, does it matter? The daily tweets are old, but only because he Wright did all his work before the technology caught up with his style.
- In Search of the Memory Garden
The Submarine Channel recently released an interview with machinima director Douglas Gayeton. His recent work includes a the first of seven planned movies in a serial work about exploring Second Life. One of the scenes from the first movie is in a place called The Memory Garden. I tried to find it. There wasn’t a lot to do there, of course, except look.
- God is gr8
There is a virtual God. Or at least there was a major service held this past Easter in a virtual world. LiveChurch.TV conducted special services in Second Life this year at their new in-world facility. The organization—which claims almost 20,000 parishioners gathering in metro churches to watch simulcast sermons—drew a diverse collection of avatars, both in terms of appearance and religious perspective, to their April 8th Easter Service. - Bite Me
A photo taken by MSNBC.com’s Rex Sorgatz (fimoculous) at the Zune headquarters a few days ago has received a lot of play in the blogosphere. There is an InfoWorld write-up on this campaign, which was first thought to be a joke. Zune is the Microsoft answer to iPod, released last November and tied heavily to their game platforms.
- Social networks
There are more social networks than one can shake a stick at. That’s not a bad thing, since it means that at some point the memberships will approach zero-sum (though will never get there) and people will naturally gravitate toward the networks that make the most sense for them. Small, beautiful and relevant are the things that help social networks become sustainable and effective. A few of the possibly new or overlooked nets available include MyColts.net, Change.com, Couchsurfing, Dodgeball.com, GoPets, Threadless and Joost.
- CommunitySchmunity
Introducing … CommunitySchmunity. This tab is essentially the same list blogroll we had before, reconfigured with some MyBlogLog and Meebo room widgets and an RSS feed reader. After fighting my semester schedule for time, I finally made good on iterating my 6-month-old idea to consolidate local Bloomington area bloggers into one site.
