News of the day: Google buys Jaiku.
If such news had to come—and if anything, I was expecting Google to make a run at acquiring Twitter—it is good it came today, a typically full one for my on the academic front. With a handful of deeper blog posts on the current micro-blogging champ Twitter sitting in the queue, I might be tempted to spend the next 12 hours working up a long response. I got a temporary account on the World Advertising Research Center web site and snagged a few business-ey papers of possible relevance to my academic design work. Access to the full online library is limited to some sample documents, and even then I was only able to download a selected few. Still, it was worth the effort since some of these publications may find their way into a future design document.
One of the recent student posts on the Interaction Culture course blog caught my attention yesterday, reminding me of an interesting bit of street art.
On Saturday, Amy and I spend the day at St. Mark’s Methodist Church attending a workshop on early childhood education. Along with Tom Hunter and Michael Leeman, Bev Bos sang some songs, told some stories, and evangelized about a better way to engage young children in learning. The two biggest take-home messages of the day: (1) Play is not a luxury, and (2) We don’t change because we’re under a spell.
For three months in 1957, the Soviets ruled outer space. That was about the time it took for the original Sputnik—which circled Earth more than 1,400 times, orbiting every 98 minutes—to burn up in the atmosphere … and for America to garner its first space success. A half century after the fact, old Soviet scientists recount the backstory that went into the design and implementation of humanity’s first man-made moon.
A few days back, Amy passed along an episode of Mr. Deity, a semi-monthly video comedy series about God. The show stars creator Brian Keith Dalton in the title role and Jimbo Marshall as his assistant / Holy Spirit, Larry. Brian hopes to develop the web video shorts into a television series.
