That is excellent news, Josh. I’m glad to see another strong showing from Big Ten schools.

I’m definitely going to Italy, so I’ll look for you there. Maybe it would be a good thing to host a Big Ten HCI party. Let me know if you are interested.

I hope you are planning on attending the Ann Arbor Startup WEekend in June. I’m going to try to be there.

I’m sorry to hear that your submission wasn’t accepted Kevin. It looked interesting, and I imagine it was difficult to assemble a submission in under a month. As you said, the judges are often quite different, and subjectivity plays a major role in scores. We had one very positive judge who didn’t say much, one positive judge with specific points for improvement, and one judge who criticized us strongly for our lack of internationalization, though with a score that was on the positive side. Still, I noticed that you are on the student volunteer list, so hopefully I will see you at some of the volunteer events.

Michigan will be sending three teams again this year, so it feels like a flashback from 2007. Hopefully my team will go further this time. Best of luck on your WIP and workshop!

We also worried about reviewers sticking to the the definition of homeless being restricted to people without a home. We are working with people in shelters. So we pulled in an excerpt of the U.S Government definition of homelessness.

“Homelessness is a condition in which an individual lacks
a fixed regular and adequate nighttime residence. It
also includes individuals whose primary nighttime
residence is a supervised, publicly or privately operated
shelter designed to provide temporary living
accommodations.”

One of the judges mentioned that they liked the fact that we had this defined in our paper.

I like your idea and I liked some of the other ideas that didn’t get in from IU. You just never know what the judges are going to like and what they are not.

Our accepted paper had two reviews with 4s and 5s and one with 3s and 2s.
